Using LastPass Basics

UNC provides LastPass Premium, a secure password management system for saving and organizing passwords. LastPass saves your logins across devices in their “Vault”.

You may ask "Is this safe?"- LastPass says, "Your data is encrypted and decrypted at the device level. Data stored in your vault is kept secret, even from LastPass. Your master password, and the keys used to encrypt and decrypt data, are never sent to LastPass’ servers, and are never accessible by LastPass".

To begin using LastPass:

  1. The first step is to download the browser extension. The links for each browser can be found here: Browser Links
  2. After installing the browser extension, open up LastPass through the extension and create your LastPass account. You’ll be prompted to make a “Master Password”. This is your password into LastPass, where your other passwords are saved/can be found.
  3. If you already have a LastPass account, the link to connect your account to UNC’s provided Premium account is here: Connect Account
  4. To access/open the Vault, click the Browser extension and "Open My Vault". In the Vault, you can save passwords, notes, addresses, credit cards, bank accounts, passports and more (even secrets). In the Vault you have secure storage all in one place. LastPass1

To set up SMS password recovery: *This is extremely important because a Master Password can NOT be reset if you have not set up password recovery ahead of time.*:

  1. Go to settings (Account Settings) in the vault and click "Update Phone". If you forget your master password they can text you a code.
  2. You can also download their mobile app on Google Play, Apple Store and Windows Phone. LastPass2

To import passwords from your browser into the Vault:

  1. Click on the LastPass browser extension (the three dots) and select “Add Item”. LastPass3
  2. From there, you can select what you would like to add to the vault. For this, we’re selecting “Password”.
  3. Enter the credentials for the website password you’d like to import. It is now viewable in your vault under the all items and passwords tabs.

To Share items:

  1. Navigate to to "all items" and hover over the tools on the far right. Click "Share" (the middle icon).
  2. Enter the email address of your recipient you wish to share with .
  3. Select if you'd like them to see the password. (If not, they can login with your credential, but they can't see the password. You may want to do this with interns/temporary staff/etc)
  4. Click share. All of this can be managed later in the "Sharing Center" on the bottom of the left side. Only sharing your passwords through LastPass’s secure sharing method is a best practice.
